ACES/American Crocodile Education Sanctuary Over the weekend, Oct. 28-30, 2011, Vince & I rescued two large, problematic crocodiles from the populated lagoon area surrounding Reef Village in North Ambergris Caye. Thank you Pam, Jeff, and Reef Village Security and residents for your help and support. This 7' 3" male American crocodile is problematic. First caught this past March in the San Juan area of Ambergris Caye, this croc is scute clipped #21. At that time the croc was only 6' 1". This healthy croc has grown a foot in 8 months. The croc was micro-chipped and re-released into an unpopulated area north that is in the progress of being protected as a wildlife refuge. This is the third time this croc has been relocated. It may return or show up as a problem somewhere else, but until ACES receives more funding relocation is the only choice other than killing this magnificent and endangered animal. ACES welcomes the assistance of locals in croc relocation's and rescues. Encouraging the community to be a part of ACES croc conservation teaches locals the value of these modern day dinosaurs in Belize's ecosystems. ACES is organizing a Naming Contest of the Reef Village crocs to aid in fund raising. Winners will get to name the crocs. Ideas on how to organize this are most welcome.
