This past July, with permission from the Belize Forest Department, ACES recovered a nest of Morelet's Crocodile eggs from a pond at Price Barracks, the home of the Belize Defense Force outside of Belize City. The eggs were uncovered by heavy rains and exposed to the hot sun. Most likely they would have all perished. In addition, a large croc residing the pond had already bitten an Officer and it was requested that all crocs in the pond be removed before a small child on base was injured. The rescued eggs were incubated in a plastic container half buried in sand and kept on a high shelf in the bathroom for warmth and humidity. Remember, in Belize humidity in July and Aug. is about 97%. On Sept. 18th at 4:00 am, we heard 'chirping' from the bucket of eggs! Having to help the little crocs from their shells, only four hatchlings emerged. This is a clip of their first feeding. Today, all four crocs are healthy and are up for 'adoption.' For a tax deductible donation of $1,000 US dollars you can name a hatchling, will receive updates and photos of the croc progress, and can stay at ACES 'Croc-Cabanas' for two FREE nights and join ACES researchers on a night croc eye-shine survey of the Rio Grande River aboard the 'Croc-Runner.' You also will learn about crocodiles and their conservation in Belize on a private tour of ACES facility with a Wildlife Biologist. Your tax-deductible donation through ACES's state-side 501 (c) (3) partner will provide funds for food and vitamins to care for the adopted crocodile, support rescue efforts of other crocs that are being illegally and often inhumanely kept, and help further crocodile research and education efforts in Belize. (All the crocs at ACES remain the property of Belize and the BFD determines the re-release/placement of rescued animals.) Only four crocs are available for this special adoption, so contact ACES at acesnpo@hughes.net or the Belize Economic and Ecological Development Fund at beedfund.com today and Help Take a Bite Out of Extinction!
