Rehab recapture!! Last year we caught a young American crocodile with a rather large slice through the ventral surface of its tail. Because of the location of the wound, every time he swam, the wound reopened, making it very difficult to heal. With help from VETinParadise, Syracuse’s tail wound was cleaned and stitched closed to promote healing. He was reintroduced back into the wild last June and we haven’t seen him since until now.
While cruising through the lagoon on our Educational Excursion, Chris hopped out of the boat to explore a shallow mangrove swamp we couldn’t get the boat to. After a couple minutes he returned with this beautiful croc! Based on the individual, scute-clipped ID number on the croc’s tail, and the telltale (no pun intended) scarring, we confirmed it was Syracuse! We were delighted to find him healthy and thriving, no longer limited by his injury. After collecting data, he was returned to the area where he was found.
