Ocean Day Presentation
Happy World Ocean's Day! We had so much fun today with the kids from Samuel Haynes Institute of Excellence from Belize City, who travelled to Ambergris Caye to learn about and appreciate the ecosystem of the Cayes.
Through a game of modified tag and an open discussion afterwards, they learned about predator-prey relationships, the importance of apex predators in an ecosystem, and what happens when an apex predator is removed. We also had Megan Shaw come chat about one of the largest issues facing ecosystem's all over the world, trash. She had us think about the many times during the day we absent-mindedly use single-use plastics, then had us brainstorm ways to change our habits.
It is OUR responsibility to protect and preserve this world. By learning about the ocean, the mangrove, the wildlife, we become informed about the delicate balance being maintained by Mother Nature every day, we become more motivated to preserve it, and ultimately better equipped to face the issues that threaten the balance. Educational events are one of our favorite aspects of working in conservation, as we get a chance to inspire those who holds Belize's future in their hands. Thank you Caye International Bank for sponsoring this event, enabling these kids to see a part of the country they haven't even been to, and for hosting us!
